Characteristics: Black Hawthorne is a large shrub or small tree 6 to 18 feet tall. Plants bear clusters of white flowers in spring. Fruits are edible but contain large seeds. They may be used to make jellies or or be mixed with other berries to make preserves. This species provides excellent fall color. Plants also bear stout thorns along branches up to an 1 long.
Cultivation: Black Hawthorne will grow in full sun to part shade. This species will tolerate seasonal flooding as well as seasonal drought. It prefers a moderately moist soil.
